Researchers have identified, or defined, different types of stalkers. These defined stalker profiles are specific to normal stalkers in society, not for organized gang stalkers. Nevertheless, organized gang stalkers undoubtedly fit some of these defined stalker-types.
4 Types of Stalkers Based on Mental Health Disorder
- The Erotomaniac
-
This kind of stalker believes that he is in love with you. To show his keen interest, he keeps calling you, dropping by, writing e-mails, doing unsolicited errands "on your behalf", talking to your friends, co-workers, and family, and, in general, making himself available at all times. The erotomaniac feels free to make for you legal, financial, and emotional decisions and to commit you without your express consent or even knowledge.
This kind of stalker believes that he is in love with you and that, regardless of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the feeling is reciprocal (you are in love with him). He interprets everything you do (or refrain from doing) as coded messages confessing your eternal devotion to him and to your "relationship". Erotomaniacs are lonely, socially-inapt people. They may also be people with whom you have been involved romantically (e.g., your former spouse, a former boyfriend, a one-night stand) - or otherwise (for instance, colleagues or co-workers).
- The Narcissist
-
Feels entitled to your time, attention, admiration, and resources. Interprets every rejection as an act of aggression which leads to a narcissistic injury. Reacts with sustained rage and vindictiveness. Can turn violent because he feels omnipotent and immune to the consequences of his actions.
- The Paranoid
-
Distorts every communication to feed his [/ her] persecutory delusions. Thrives on threats, anxiety, and fear.
In extreme case, can be by far the most dangerous the lot. Lives in an inaccessible world of his own making. Cannot be reasoned with or cajoled.
-
Though ruthless and, typically, violent, the psychopath is a calculating machine, out to maximize his [/ her] gratification and personal profit. Psychopaths lack empathy and may even be sadistic - but understand well and instantly the language of carrots and sticks.
6 Types of Stalkers Based on Motive
- Rejected stalker
-
Follow their victims in order to reverse, correct, or avenge a rejection (e.g., divorce, separation, termination).
- Resentful stalker
-
Make a vendetta because of a sense of grievance against the victims – motivated mainly by the desire to frighten and distress the victim.
- Intimacy seeker
-
seek to establish an intimate, loving relationship with their victim. Such stalkers often believe that the victim is a long-sought-after soul mate, and they were 'meant' to be together.
- Incompetent suitors
-
Despite poor social or courting skills, have a fixation, or in some cases, a sense of entitlement to an intimate relationship with those who have attracted their amorous interest. Their victims are most often already in a dating relationship with someone else.
- Predatory stalker
-
Spy on the victim in order to prepare and plan an attack – often sexual – on the victim.
- Vengeance/ Terrorist/ Political stalker
-
Both the vengeance stalker and terrorist stalker (the latter sometimes called the political stalker) do not, in contrast with some of the aforementioned types of stalkers, seek a personal relationship with their victims but rather force them to emit a certain response.
-
The vengeance stalker's motive is "to get even" with the other person whom he/she perceives has done some wrong to them (e.g., an employee who believes is fired without justification from a job by a superior).
-
The political stalker intends to accomplish a political agenda, also using threats and intimidation to force the target to refrain or become involved in some particular activity regardless of the victim's consent. For example, most prosecutions in this stalking category have been against anti-abortionists who stalk doctors in an attempt to discourage the performance of abortions.
7 Types of Stalkers Based on Circumstance
- Domestic
-
Stalking a former spouse or paramour. This is the most prevalent kind of stalking and one which can manifest in the workplace, putting innocent bystanders at risk.
- Lust
-
Serial predators who stalk victim after victim. Serial rapists and murderers may begin as lust stalkers. For example, Ted Bundy.
- Love-Scorned
-
An acquaintance, coworker, neighbor, etc. who desires an intimate relationship with the victim, but is rebuffed. (A sub-type of the love-scorned stalker is someone with the delusional disorder erotomania. This type of stalker—usually female—believes her target is madly in love with her. The woman who repeatedly broke into David Letterman’s home and stole his car, claiming to be his wife, is one example.)
- Celebrity
-
Those who stalk famous people. For example, John Hinckley.
- Political
-
Stalking motivated by political beliefs, which could include either agreement or disagreement with the victim. For example, Sirhan Sirhan.
- Hit (murder for hire)
-
Stalking of a victim by a hired killer in order to commit murder.
